SciFi and Fantasy Art: Secrets of the Forest (Second Picture, Detail)

December 2004 - Soft pencils and water colour - Original size 17cm x 24cm

A christmas gift.
Again that nice mixed media effect. In fact it's this picture, where I first tried it out. Then, because I liked it so much, I drew the other one again, with the same technique.
Hehe, guess what bird species is behind those songgryphons! :)

Most cute ^_^

*first comment dance*

2 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hehehe, nope, no finch. ^.^ Thankies and cookies for the funny first comment dance!"

Uuuhhh..Hmm. Are they done after orioles?

1 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hehe, nope. Those would have much more yellow on their body and not so much on the wing. 2"

Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), know as "Steglits" here in Sweden. I've seen goldfinches where I live, but not so often as I'd like... Nice pic!

12 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hehe, good guess! Close but not quite. Actually I have drawn goldfinch-songgryphons as well: HERE. But these fellows have another spechies in them. 2"
22 Dec 2004:-) Kristina 'Aryana' Siers
Beautiful! What more to say?

2 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you, Aryana! You're so kind, you're visiting at every update! 2 Merry christmas!"
22 Dec 2004:-) Kerstin ´kolibri´ Eiben
Hm, I would have said goldfinch too at first thought... but it could be the waxwing (Seidenschwanz, bombycilla garrulus).. Your two "secrets of the forest"-pics give a nice winter and christmas feeling, they're atmospheric 2

3 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you Kerstin! 2 And you solved the riddle, is is Bombycilla garrulus. *Hands over the digital cookie prize.* Merry christmas!"

The same as for the other picture - I love motive and perspective alot. Here the songgryphns seem to have a little bit woodpecker inside...

1 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thanks again, Uta! Well, since this riddle is already solved, I can just say, it's the "Seidenschwanz". Hmm. But I bet a woodpecker-songgryphon would look lovely! Maybe I'll draw one... Merry christmas to you!"
26 Dec 2004:-) Christel 'Kris' Scheja
Again sweet little guys!

1 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hehe, or maybe "ghastly beasts" after all ... There has been the idea of warrior songgryphons around. I guess I'll really have to draw some. After that reaction under the christmas tree ..."

This is really interesting! An unexpected perspective and nice use of colour and black & white. Good use of shadow and light too.

One has the feeling it's part of a larger story. Very original.

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you, Sarah! I like the way the combination of black and white and coloured parts turned out, too."

Yeah, those definitely seem to be part waxwing. What kind of waxwing, I'm not certain, but definitely waxwing.

3 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you Vanshira. I am always happy, when I manage to draw a songgryphon recognizably after a songbird species."

Its not fair
i wanted them to be owls
however , now i have discovered a beautiful word called waxwing
which can be used in poems and songs
love the picture
those song gryphons are adorable

1 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hehe, I think owls would'n really count as songgryphons. But I agree, Waxwing is a cool name for a bird! 2 Thanks so much!"
